Quorn again!

Hello Dear Reader,

I couldn’t resist the pun! Later day today as I did some visiting on my way home. Consequently, my tummy rumbled all the way home and I wanted something to eat within minutes of getting through the door. If in a hurry? Turn to Quorn. Slice and stir fry: an onion, a pepper, some garlic, mange tout, and some mushrooms, when almost cooked add in a cup full of frozen quorn chunks per person. I then finished it off with some 10p a pack stir fry sauce I bought a while back from Approved Foods. I used Pilau rice, Lidl’s own brand and you just microwave it. A little more expensive than usual but it did mean we had supper within fifteen minutes of opening the door and crossing the threshold. I couldn’t get a takeaway delivered in that time!

There are plenty of variations of stir fry that are quick cheap and easy and just perfect for the end of a busy day or if you get in later than usual. Far too often people think that a takeaway is easier. I can’think of anything simpler than stir fry quorn with rice.

Until tomorrow,

Love Froogs xx

  1. I'm not even sure what quorn is, but I'd love to know what others cook when they need to put a super-quick meal on the table. This is what I did last night: took fish filets from the freezer and put them in cold water. Nuked a couple of potatoes. Breaded the fish in cornmeal and sliced up the potatoes, peel and all (I washed them before I put them in the microwave). I fried the fish in one pan and the potatoes in the other. Made a quick salad with the greens I found in the fridge and some leftover pickled beets for color. On the table in 20 minutes, including time to thaw the fish.

I usually have steak in the freezer and use it only on those nights I need a super quick dinner. I've never had a family member complain that they had to eat steak than take-out! And I can cook it faster, too.

  3. Dinner in 15 minutes is an issue close to my heart. I work full-time and choose to work 4 days per week of long days plus 1.5 hour commute each way, so am out of the house for 13.5 hours and do not get home till after 7pm. It is a lifestyle choice and not one that I will do forever. Meanwhile, quick meals are essential.

The meal looks lovely, Froogs. I have heard of Quorn, although I have never actually eaten it.

The other day I thinly sliced 1 semi-frozen chicken breast fillet (easy to slice), chopped up carrot, broccoli stalks, chillies, broccoli and cooked some rice. This was all done the night before and put in bowls in the fridge.

When I arrived home I popped a block of frozen, diced onion (home-grown last year) in the wok, added the chicken and finally the vegies. At the same time I added a little water to the rice and microwaved it. Sauce is made with tamari, powdered ginger, lime juice, cornflour and water. I blend these together in a jug, push the stir-fry to the side of the wok, add sauce, stir till thickened and toss through veg and chicken. Dinner ready in 10 - 15 minutes. We live in a rural area away from any shops so takeaway is not an option anyway.

My keys to quick meals are menu planning, slow-cooker, wok, bulk cooking and frozen meals.

  4. Dear Froogs

You would DIE at the prices of groceries here in Australia, I do admire your commitment to frugality and your discipline SO MUCH!!!!

Meanwhile I don't quilt (Crochet is my craft of choice) but I am hardcore wanting to learn to quilt after seeing your lovely handiwork.

I 'spose I'd need a sewing machine though wouldn't I? Plus I spose I'd actually need to know how to do it….

No idea what Quorn is but well done you! x

  5. I've never heard of Quorn. Is it a meat substitue? Like tofu? I live in the states so I'm not familiar with this brand. Also, do you know if Accepted Foods ships? Keep up the good work!
