Up-cycling a vintage table cloth

Hello Dear Reader,

Last November, I bagged myself a load of vintage tea-towels and tablecloths for only 99p via ebay. I’ve used a few bits and bobs for students to make aprons; I made an apron for a friend and I’ve kept the rest of this very good quality linen for further use.

Yesterday, I couldn’t find any decent napkins so today, I’ve cut a tablecloth (which is too small for my table) into sixteen twelve inch squares and have edged them to make napkins. I have no idea how much sixteen linen napkins would cost but mine cost about 5p for the lot! In fact, I think the electricity to sew with cost more than the fabric!

I’ve a few more to sew but I’ve plenty of time and these really are a frugal bargain! I’ve also had great fun ripping weeds and ivy out of my garden and it’b beginning to look tidy. Another lovely day at home and a no spend day too.

Until tomorrow,

Love Froogs

  1. Hi Froogs
Me thinks we are very like minded. My partner has jammies that he can no longer wear and are in good nick, so I decided to make some extra hankies fro him. I have e done the same regarding the table cloth into napkins , saved a fortune as good Irish linen ones make my purse quiver in a worrying way lol. like you I feel you can never have enough cloths or tea towels whenever i see any that suit my budget home the come!
At the moment I a making cushion covers out of the odds n sods I have in my cupboard need to make some drawstring bags next but not till after I have finished off a couple of blankets I have started. My challenge is how cheaply can I pretty up the house out of what I have without compromising on the quality. gets boring after a while stinking yer hand in yer pocket!
    fab post as always
    Rachel.

  2. Excellent use of your time, FQ! Nice linen napkins are at least $4 US each, yet mine are either homemade or from the charity shops. Actually picked up 4 vintage Vera Bradley ones today in a lovely, cheery, floral print @ 25 cents/napkin. Yours by far are cheaper yet!

  3. I used to self half a dozen linen napkins for £12.99 in my little gift shop and THAT was selling them cheaply, the RRP was £19.99 for half a dozen!!

So you have saved a fortune….well done.

  4. When the local charity shop had their linens on 50% off, I snapped up several tablecloths. The cashier said, “Isn't it nice to see a young lady who appreciates the pretty things?”

I shocked her with the reply, “I will cut these up to make blouses!” 😛
