Tour of Britain - Barnstable to Dartmouth.

Hello Dear Reader,

Above is Froogs on the look out for the Tour of Britain. We met up with friends and their children and walked out of their moorland village to find a good vantage point to watch the tour.

The boys had great fun waving at the police and support vehicles.

Even the safety bikes gave up a wave. As the race came nearer, we could hear the helicopter filming the race approaching and knew they had made it up the nine mile climb across Dartmoor. They were on their way. We had chosen a narrow spot with high walls to sit on to get a good view.

The speed they travelled and the ‘whoosh’ as they went be was amazing. First, came ten break away riders.

Then their support vehicles.

More friendly police as they escorted the pelaton.

I love to see the film crews hanging off the back of motor bikes.

In a blink…………..they were on their way across the moors as they headed south to Dartmouth.

We cheered on the back of the race. After all, they’d cycled from Barnstable. We cheered for everyone, no favourites, just wanted to wish the athletes a happy passage through Devon.

We drove across Dartmoor from Tavistock and by ten o clock this morning, the moorland route was lined and I’m glad we found our small patch without crowds to be there to cheer the cyclists onwards. I was exciting to see the race and now I’m just looking forward to next year.

Sporting events are normally beyond our budget (I used to enjoy watching Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Raiders) but this was free and certainly exciting to see.

Until tomorrow,

Love Froogs xxxx

  1. I cycled about 4 miles to see it in the rain. I was getting so excited cycling there thinking I had chosen a very quiet spot. So did lots of other people! It was on a bend with a good approach view. That was Stage 2.

I was interested watching the Stoke on Trent stage as Gun Hill was one of my routes when I was cycle training. (I used to cycle race and the terrain was very hard there). It was great looking at all the scenery I used to live in, Oakamoor, The Roaches and of course Gun HIll.

Didn't the Police enjoy the cavalcade? They were all waving at us too.

  2. It looks like a fun, frugal day out with friends, Froogs. (A gift of alliteration for an English teacher!)

Love your posts on your frugal days out. You take great photos. I always Google maps your trips and dream I am there. Would love to spend time in your part of the world.

  3. Hi Froogs That looked like a great day out in a pretty part of the world. Nice to see something different to everyday traffic. Lovely wee boys too. :):) Hope your sewing going well for you.

  4. I bet the little groups of supporters for the race in the most unusual places lift the spirits of the racers even more than the big crowds.

And you can't beat a free sporting event……the weather looked good too.

  5. We've enjoyed supporting cyclists through various small and big (Tour de France!) races. I think that Sue is right - a small group of supporters somewhere slightly remote, making a lot of noise, probably does much to lift their spirits.

  6. Great photos particularly of my youngest!
However you have claimed a nuclear bunker of couscous, you saw my cupboard! AP is fantastic, but it can end up putting people off certain food! Great to see you both, see you soon. XX
