Hello Dear Reader,
I was up at stupid o’clock this morning as the ‘clock change’ always puts me out of kilter and I spend four days not knowing what time it is. I flicked through the TV channels and came across the ‘Create Crap’ channel where a lovely lady made a Christmas stocking from a kit she was flogging for £31. I knew I had enough odds and sods lying around to make one for next to nothing. I had some spare batting, some old pyjamas, some scrap material and a cut up man’s shirt from the charity shop. The lovely ‘Create Crap’ channel has a small video of the very nice lady making the stocking and here’s the link
I cut out a stocking shape, you can do this in any size you want. I then found some decorative fabrics to cover and back the stocking and an old linen table cloth ( I bought a job lot for 99p on ebay have been using them for a variety of craft activities ever since) I used the flip and stitch method of quilting and she shows you how on her video
Here’s the close up.
Once I covered the entire stocking shape and pinned the edges and then sewed down the edges.
I used some snowmen jim jams for the backing.
I put the backing and the fronting right sides together and two layers of inning or inny bits on the bottom of the pile. I pinned it and then trimmed it.
Here’s the pinned and trimmed stocking.
I then sewed all round the edge to secure the whole lot.
I then turned it all to the right side - here’s the back with Mr Snowy.
Here’s the front.
I then decided I wanted a Yoosta-Bee logo on it………..this would have been easier if I had done this before assembling the entire thing!
A stocking needs a loop to hang it. I used the cuff off the short sleeved shirt and turned it in on itself and then stitched it.
I used another shirt to make the edging and I did this just as I edge my quilts.
My hand sewing on the inside, isn’t so neat but it can’t be seen from the outside.
Here’s the finished stocking.
Close up of the back.
Close up of the front.
A long shot of all of it.
One stripy Christmas stocking, didn’t cost £31! and took me about an hour to make it. Now I just need to make the items to go in it for my daughter! Then, one for my son!
Until tomorrow,
Love Froogs xxxx

Absolutely wonderful. I love it!!

I have been making Christmas Stockings since i was a child. My Granny was a keen scrimper and bought nothing that could be made at home. We used cut up clothing and bedding just as you do. I pop into every charity shop that I can and look for plaid shirts. The material makes stockings and bags to use for gifts. In the January sales I buy Christmas decs and ribbons to embellish my thrifty makes.

Hi Froogs,
Lovely Christmas stocking! I have made them for all my kids and grandkids. All us quilters have these kinds of scraps around.
I too was up at a crazy hour. My sister and her husband were on tsunami alert with that earthquake in BC. She phoned me on her cell, as she had no access to the computer or news, so she could find out more information. I was relaying info to family in the east of Canada. I think the adrenaline rush kept me up:-) Slept in a bit this morning.
Happy crafting!

I hate that channel, I am going to make some santa sacks as soon as my sewing machine needles come from ebay. The joys of owning a vintage sewing machine.

Lovely simple video, its amazing what people will pay for a kit when you can make it yourself for pennies. I use fleece for lots of things, usually the cheap Ik*a ones which are excellent quality and would do for the backing on the stocking. may well make a nice blue one from shirt materials I have saved.

Hi Froogs, oh how cruel!!! lol.. I love create and crap whoops sorry create and craft! I try at the weekends to watch their sewing and quilting programmes, usually sat in bed (if before 9am!) with a cup of tea, pad and pen to write down a whole host of ideas and then off to my little craft room to see how I can make it and not paying their ridiculous prices!! I've been ogglying the bias binding maker - which if you go to Amazon is half their price!!! I oggly but don't buy - it comes under the 'when I win the lottery purchases'
Love your christmas stocking - its gorgeous! Wonderful blog as always. Have a good week.

That's just great!
Like the poster above I use the cheap fleece blankets from Ikea for backing etc.
A free voucher was given in the free Metro the other day for free blanket from Ikea - my sister picked me up one in red - just perfect for Christmas crafts.

Lovely big stocking. I used red velvet gift bags when my two were small because you couldn't actually fit anything in the stockings you could buy at that time. But the bags were too big and it was costing me a fortune to fill them with stocking fillers. (Big presents went under the tree) So I carefully took them apart and made them an inch smaller all round. That made them a perfect size so that some chocolate, a few bits of stationery, some pretty hairbands and one or two toys and games made them absolutely bulging. I realised that it was the appearance of plenty that mattered rather than the absolute quantity.
Do you have a blind hem foot with your machine Froogs? If you do then you could use that to stitch in the ditch round the binding on the outside and it would secure it on the inside at the same time to save hand sewing it down
