Hello Dear Reader,
I’ve finished another bag! I’m on a bit of a go slow as I’ve had a headache for two days which is just started to subside! Here’s another Yoosta-Bee. The outside used to be a curtain, the inside used to be a tablecloth and the edging used to be a pillow case.
I bought all of these fabrics at a jumble sale and I’ve been practising my bag making skills to share with people at the bag making workshop on Saturday. Here’s a reminder to everyone coming, you’ll also need pins, fabric scissors, plenty of fabric, your sewing machine and thread. Really, really looking forward to this Saturday as it promises to be a lot of fun xxxx

Lovely! I especially like the cheery yellow. Would make a very nice gift. I have a whole collection of “fabric” bags that I've collected over the years for shopping. Most of the freebies as store or product promotions are made of a strange, papery type fabric that doesn't withstand years of service, especially as i do wash my bags occassionally. Good hygenic practice, BTW. There was a news documentary a few years ago about how dirty the average shoppers reusable bag was. Ick!
I did try my hand at making some bags this past Summer. One was sent to Mom as a birthday gift. I used pristine, heavy cotton canvas that originally was purchased at a thrift shop. As my bags die off (I do mend them as well), I will replace them with all homemade fabric ones. I bought patterns (normally $10 here) when on promotion @ $1.

A brilliant idea for using up all those nicie strong household type fabrics especially, then you can chuck all the heavy shopping in without worrying about things falling straight through the bottom and breaking a toe….as happened to my daughter in law recently with a shop bought bag!!
And using these bags you can buy loose produce, even potatoes, from the greengrocers like we used to do and then wash them when they get grubby, thus saving on so much unnecessary packaging.
Do you make the handles with enough space to go over your shoulder or just to carry by hand?

I wish i was closer, the most i've ever managed on my sewing machine was some curtains and a few seams. Glad it only cost me £20 🙂

I'm a great one for shopping bags as well,especially if I am shopping locally .Never bother using what they provide I go for a good trawl through the shelves particularly the reduced stuff. used to get funny looks but now they dont bother lol. have been making some bags myself of late had some beautiful Laura Ashly thrifted my way.
Like you cant stand unnecessary packaging! though when buying fruit and veg I carefully cut open the plastic bags and use then for pedal bin liners work a treat! and the netting is good as a gentle scourer.
