Hello Dear Reader,
Not quite true…..we’ll have heating tomorrow. We have to wait for the fire cement to go off on the joints; we just lit it with some paper and kindling to take the photograph. To be honest, it’s not really cold so we don’t need heating. The ambient temperature of the house is currently 20 degrees so really quite warm.
On a different note, we’ll be off on a short break to North Yorkshire on Wednesday and shall visit Whitby. Any ideas on things we really mustn’t miss when we’re there. I know we usually go to France but the ferries couldn’t get us there and back for a short trip due to Brittany ferries getting an upgrade.
As today has been noisy, drafty with the doors opening and closing, and have turned the dogs into barking freaks. I’m off to bed to watch TV on the ipad as I’m worn out!
I should be back to full speed tomorrow!

I see someone knows a good place to lie! it all looks so cosy and lovely.
Haven't been in Whitby for decades, since I was a kid. But you need to climb the 199 steps if they still let you — deliberately short of the round number 200, as an acknowledgment that only God can be perfect. Or so they say. They lead up to the Abbey, which I hope you can see, too, very ancient history there, all around St. Hilda. We were always forced as kids to climb those steps at least once in our lives as a tribute to the people who built them! tradition, you know..

Your woodburner looks great. I see that the flue is attached at the back rather than on the top so you'll be able to cook on the top as you have a lovely big flat surface. I love being able to keep the utility bills down a bit further by cooking on ours and look forward to hearing about your culinary exploits. I've been taking notes on your crockpot cooking too : )

Whitby is fantastic but parking can be a problem during school hols. I think it's the goth festival at the weekend so even busier but some great sights. There are some lovely shops in the old part, over the river near the 199 steps, climb them to the abbey. Botham's bakery is worth a look but the Magpie cafe(fish&schism) is a bit overrated and usually has huge queues. A photo by the whalebones on the clifftop is obligatory and if you go on a boat ride you'll see cliff the crocodile. It's yorkshire so you're bound to enjoy it. x

We always go up to the Abbey, Just take a flask up with you, if you do pay to go in they sometimes have open air theatre productions of Dracula which is amazing but that might only be in summer months. We usually visit Whitby most years. Famous fish and chips of course. xx

Congratulations both on the heating AND having saved up to pay in full having it installed! It looks very warm & cozy. I can picture you and DB enjoying it for many years to come. 🙂 FWIW, I don't think some of the comments the other day were from trolls, necessarily. In the US there are different regulations and terms for things. Also, living in CA where environmentalism has been something of a religion since the 1970s (and many are very hard core/militant), it's common to be questioned about environmental “ethics” as a general rule. It can be annoying, but it's not personal. Just as I know you weren't being personal (in response to a comment of mine) about the ethics of clothing… buying used, making one's own, or making sure it's from your country made from fabrics produced in-country.

Went to Whitby recently. Love it. Fish and chips a must…there is also a steam bus - the only one in the world but it is very noisy. We loved the steam trains the most at Goathland where the series Heartbeat was filmed. Have fun.

Staiithes is worth a visit. No parking in Staithes so leave car at Cowbar bank and enjoy stretching your legs on the beautiful coastpath.

The wood burner looks lovely. I think everyone else has just about covered everything Whitby. The only other things I can think of are the whalebone arch on the opposite side of the river to the abbey, the Captain Cook Museum - think it's on Grape Lane, the White Horse & Griffin pub/restaurant which is one of the oldest dating from the 1690s with lots of connections to historic characters, and if you're feeling at all indulgent and want to splurge on a meal, Greens of Whitby comes highly recommended. Have fun and enjoy your break.

I remember visiting friends who had a fire like that, and she would have a pot of soup bubbling away on the top. awesome. I wonder if we are going to see a new series of recipes:) My hubbies relatives came from Yorkshire so I am keen to see how you enjoy it, as we plan a trip there someday. Have a good mini break.

Your wood burner looks so inviting, I am sorry trolls felt the necessity to try and take the shine of it for you, some people have far too much time on their hands ! Enjoy your trip to whitby, I have only been as a child but have fond memories of trawling the beach for ammonites and of climbing up to the majestic abbey. Hope your chest is better soon xxx

You have to visit Eden Camp its a little inland from Whitby but well worth the visit as it is an old WWII prisoner of war camp and is just chock a block full of everything you will want to know or see about WWII but not in a boring way and for lunch visit the canteen as they do all the old fashioned war time food,its great food and huge portions too.We took our kids a couple of years ago and we all loved it so well worth thinking about

We spent 3 nights in Yorkshire on our recent trip to the UK. I would definitely second Robin Hoods Bay - a gorgeous spot and great for beachcombing at low tide. We parked near Whitby Abbey and walked the stairs down to the town.
We stayed in Thirsk and caught the train to York where there is lots to see and of course, a walk along the walls.
There is also the Dales with the quaint villages, walks and stunning scenery at every turn.

We had the heating engineers in for 3 days last week and our dogs were going bananas!! Trying to keep them away from the engineer who had his head under the floorboards and his bum sticking out of the cupboard door was a challenge! Why are dogs so nosey? Every time the back door was opened the dogs shot out into the garden barking. Your stove looks fantastic. Well done saving up for it. Like us, the work has been saved for and will be paid for, and it has probably meant doing without a lot for a while to save up for it. But isn't it worth it? Have a super holiday (and hope you feel well enough to enjoy it). I've never been to Whitby but a friend told me she had been to Eden Camp and it was good. Have fun and take lots of pics for us to see xx

We went to Yorkshire last month when we were in England, Rail museum in York is free, Captain Cook monument, and museum, watch the boats from up on the cliffs or down in the harbour watch or ride the steam train. Goathland (Aidensfield), We spent 4 days in York proper and it wasn't enough. Great place.

Magpie in Whitby for the best fish and chips. Judith's fabrics for bits and bobs. North Yorkshire Railroad, and just the lovely sights. Goth weekend to me sounds a complete nightmare….

There is a great cycle/walking track that goes from Whitby to Scarborough via Robin Hoods bay. Its the old railway line and the views can be stunning. In Whitby its accessed from near the railway station and makes for a nice ride/walk even if you only do part of it. Itcan also be accessed easily in Robin Hoods bay

Your lounge looks so cosy Froogs. I can just picture it at Christmas time. I'm in hot Australia and feel quite envious of you. There is nothing so relaxing than a real wood fire.

Whitby Museum is utterly amazing. It is run by volunteers and there is a charge to go in but it lasts all day. The museum is, well, crammed. On one wall is cemented in the actual skeleton of an ichthyosaur, there's a pleisosaur on another wall, Maori spears jostle with Alaskan paddles, there are cases of Whitby Jet next to the case with local medals and there is an actual hand of glory. It is the size of a sports hall with the contents of three decent sized musuems in. The staff are lovely as well. The tour bus ticket in summer lasts for 24 hours and you can get on and off as many times as you like in that time but if you enjoy a good walk then I wouldn't bother. Don't forget to watch the tide tables for when the beach is empty. (holiday in Whitby every year for the past few years, still not bored of the museum) x

Wanted to thank you for the inspiration to try out crock pot. We took and apple and onion on the bottom. Put the chicken on top with a bottle of hard cider. There was some salt and pepper too. It is cooking and smells wonderful. Probably will have it on rice or grain with a vegetable. Thanks again. Husband got me the idea off the internet for the chicken.
