Hello Dear Reader,
When people know you are a thrifty sewer, they will often offer you fabric they have come by or they have no use for. I have been given a sample book of fabric; of Nina Campbell upholstery and curtain fabric. It will make great bags and cushions. It is 100% linen and made in the UK.

I have the entire sample book and I’m going to use it to make cushions. You’ll have to watch this space as to what I do with the cushions. Next year you will be able to follow my extremely and deeply frugal home make over. That’s a home make over when you haven’t got any money. You know how it goes.

Here’s what the fabric looks like when it had been cut from the sample book and the labels removed from the back. The steam iron and patience got those off. Should you wish to buy any of Nina Campbell’s fabrics, then you’ll need to start at £55 a metre! I bought the cushion pads for £1.25, so that is exactly what each cushion will cost me! The fabrics all have a faded but elegant shabby chic look about them and they are going to be a welcome addition to one of the rooms I will refurbish.
If I were selling these, they would be part of my frugally luxurious range!

Very pretty fabric. I made some cushion covers once out of a sample book. The material was pretty similar and of very good quality. Can't wait to see your makeovers.

What a piece of luck, I've always wondered what happens to those sample books when the new season's fabrics come in - can't believe the price of some of those fabrics - who buys them???

These cushions will be beautiful! Isn't it fun to get cheap fabric? I used to spend my paycheck in quilt shops- never again! Treasure hunting in thrift shops is much more fun! Yesterday I spent $3 and got yards and yards!

A lovely windfall. How about keeping one piece aside and making a few of those zippered pouches I see everywhere on the internet. They are great for little old ladies who need to cart medicines and supplies in their handbags. They are also terrific for keeping nappies tidy when going out, without looking like a bag lady. You sew very well; keep it up as it encourages all of us.

I got a load of similar fabric books from the local scrap store ( not saying where!!) plus a load of other very expensive fabric - I will be using it for curtains and quits when I get time to get started on them..but I know exactly what I will do with them.
Do you have a Scrapstore locally? For a very small subscription I find I can get LOADS of recycled stuff - morethan enough to keep my crafty heart beating faster. And it is terrific if you run any crafting workshops, as we both do.

What a beautiful cushion! It certainly does belong in a frugal luxury range, you're very lucky to have eyes and ears open on your behalf searching for fabrics for you:). I'm very excited about the thought of a frugal home makeover, I've been working on my own frugal makeover myself and I've started with patchwork curtains from my stash:).

And so am I! That was what I really picked up on in your post. I am dying to see your ideas, since my home needs sprucing up.
I know the cheapest thing you can do is clean-really clean- your house. Painting is cheap compared to the improvement it makes. Where I live, you can get free paint at the recycling center that others have donated. Some recycling centers mix all of their white, beige, gray and yellow together and sell it very cheaply. It makes a nice beige. If you get into mixing paint colors yourself (whether for a specific color or to stretch free paint), I have learned (the hard way) to add the color to the white or beige paint, not the other way around. I have seen unopened gallons of paint at yard (boot) sales for $1-$2 can. My friend bought one and she and I painted her kitchen for $1.

Love, love, they were selling hessian sacks at a xmas Fair in Durham, they were 4 4 £5, but when i mentioned this to hubby and did a screw face!!!! They would have easily made 8 cushions. I told me I was as mad as a fruitcake!!!

I was given a sample book of Sanderson fabrics over 30 years ago, and made a lovely quilt, still in use. Definitely frugal luxury!

I love the things you sew, you are so talented. I think I may have a go at something in the New Year (as long as it's easy to start with) as you have inspired me.. it will be lovely to do on a cold winters evening.

A friend gave me a huge pile of fabric samples a while back, and I am still deciding what to do with them all…there are such beautiful patterns on some of them.
