Gluten free mince and potato pie

Hello Dear Reader,

I’m getting better at making gluten free pasty. There’s no need to rush these things, it took me years to get over my fear of wheat flour pastry and I mastered it eventually. It’s the same with gluten free pastry.

Here’s how I make my savoury pie pastry

16oz Gluten free bread flour - it already has Xanthan gum added.
1 beaten egg
4oz of very cold well refridgerated lard
4oz of butter, equally cold.
Salt and water as required.

Add the flour to a bowl and add the salt, mix well.
Grate the fats into the bowl.
Add the beaten egg and stir in.
Add water and stir in until you have reached the pastry consistency you require. Always make gluten free baked products wetter as they will dry out and always require more fluid.

If you’ve every eaten a suet crust pie crust, then this is similar, the crust will be crunchy and structural. The butter and egg gives it a rich flavour. Also, not rubbing the fat in gives the pastry an air of rough puff without the effort.

Chill in the fridge.

The filling

300g of minced meat
1 finely diced onion
1 tin of potatoes - value brand
1 tin of carrots
garlic granules
stock cube
water and gravy granules.

1. Fry the mince and onions until the mince has browned and starts to ‘catch’
2. Chop the potatoes and add them along with the carrots
3. Add a little water, bring to boil, then allow to simmer for 15 minutes.
4. Add the gravy granules to thicken.
5. You want this pie to be solid and not runny or sloppy.

6. Roll out the pastry as required, GF pastry is delicate.

7. Pack the pie, the fillings are cheap and this feeds an entire family in one pie.

8. Crimp the edges and glaze the pie with beaten egg.

9. Bake at 180 for 30 - 45 minutes. The filling is already cooked - you just need to cook the pastry through.

Here it is, gluten free, mince and potato pie. Served with green beans, cabbage and a slosh of gravy. I don’t make pies very often, too nice, too fattening and too easy to eat too much! But this is just too good and we really enjoyed it.

Any one else out there who can’t eat gluten? Darn stuff just can’t be tolerated by my digestive system so I steer well clear. Anyone else struggle with pastry? Has anyone ever tried gluten free hot water crust pastry? I really miss pork pies.

Until tomorrow,

Love Froogs xxxx

  1. I struggle with pastry! It always tastes good, but it's hard to get into the pie pan without tearing. Mine is not gluten-free, either-I would imagine that GF pastry, because of its added moisture, would also be hard to work. I am 68 and rarely make pies because I never developed the knack.I was told if I would make a pie a day for 10 days, I'd get the knack, but then I would weigh 300 lbs.!

  2. Thank you for this post, I must bookmark it, I have bought some GF flour to try, my digestive system is far from happy, so I normally restrict my intake of baked goods, but I love baking.

  3. Your pie crust looks lush! I 've just made a batch of very sorry looking scones. I think the pastry was too 'runny' and I forgot to add the baking powder until last moment. Still whilst not looking very presentable they tasted good.

  4. I can't eat gluten, it makes me very ill. I've mastered gf pastry in pies but found it too delicate for pasties, I buy a gf pastry mix to make them. I struggle with making gf pasta as well, takes a lot of patience but it's worth it.

  5. Another one here who avoids gluten. I don't eat dairy either so need to make most things from scratch. Just mastered the perfect gluten and dairy free chocolate cake 🙂

  6. In the USA minced would be what we refer to as ground meat. A minced meat pie, here, refers to the Christmas pie made of fruit and spices. When I first read your title to this post I was thrown off “a fruit, spice and potato pie?”. Of course continuing to read and see your pictures this thought was quickly banished. I did a little research on what is a minced meat pie and it's origins and it all comes together now.

  7. Thanks for posting this, especially the quick and simple Gluten Free pastry. We all love a pie but usually I end up doing separate ones for me and the gluten tolerant rest of the family, therefore I can't often be bothered! I made a similar pie to yours using your pastry recipe and it was great. Everyone ate it happily. I'll be making it again and again. I froze the blocks of fat to make them easier to handle. What a great way of turning a packet of mince into something special.

  8. P.S. I'm thinking this pastry will make lovely Mince Pie pastry. I cause myself tummy distress every year eating normal mince pies because the gluten free ones you buy aren't great and are so expensive. I too miss a good pork pie so I'll see if anyone comments with a good gluten free pork pie pastry recipe.

  9. Well you know what they say, a little bit of what you fancy does no harm. Yes, your gluten free pastry is certainly getting more pretty but at the end of the day, your stomach can't see it but do know what you mean about the look of a thing.

  10. Hello, this is an awesome recipe and I certainly fancy doing it for my blog if that would be ok. I love mice and cook with it regularly, I'll credit to you of course. Your blog is great, it's a really good idea especially in today's climate 😀 I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to make my own pastry though lol - Richard 😀
