Old friend, a walk and some crab cakes.

Hello Dear Reader,

A friend came over to have lunch with me today and we walked it off in the afternoon. One of the wonderful things about being older is that I can say, ‘we have been friends for thirty years’. Few, if any friendships can be so enduring and I’m lucky to have such a friend. We went for a walk around Duloe, between Liskeard and Looe and made our way to the stone circle, which can be found in the centre of the village.

Let me tell you about lunch. You can entertain on quite a grand scale for very little more than some imagination. If any of you bought the tinned crab from Approved Food and wondered what you could do with it, then here’s a fabulous recipe for you.

Crab cakes and Salad.

Recipe:

4 potatoes - peeled, cooked and mashed - allow to cool
2 tins of crab meat.
Tspn of chopped chili (I buy this in a jar…..it keeps for years!)
Tspn of chopped ginger (Same again…………it’s called Lazy ginger/chili)
Tspn of chopped coriander (Um………I didn’t have any so I used dried chopped coriander)
Tspn of chopped garlic (are you getting a pattern here? I didn’t have any of that either, so I used dried garlic granules)
1 egg to bind.

Mix the lot and form into 12 patties of any shape.

Shallow fry in some oil. Serve with salad.

Salad before I added the falafels and crab cakes.

For the salad, I made two. I use mint and lemon cous cous, some beetroot, chopped tomatoes and beetroot. I also grated some carrot and chopped some ice gem lettuce. I made up some falafels (also from Approved Food) and made some hummus.

Recipe -
Tin of chick peas.
Juice of one jif lemon,
Teaspoon of garlic granules,
2 teaspoons of oil,
salt and pepper,
teaspoon of cumin,
teaspoon of paprika,
2 tablespoons of tahini

Blitz in the food processor. Serve - test to check it meets your flavour requirements………..I always add more lemon juice.

Salad, crab cakes, falafels, hummus and sweet chilli sauce.

I had a lovely day, and then repeated the process in the evening by making this for Dearly Beloved when he came home from work. If you’re ever in Cornwall, there are many ancient sites for you to enjoy; the stone circle at Duloe is just one of them.

Over to you dear reader…………….tell us all about the ancient sites near you; what would you show me if I came to visit your neck of the woods?

Until tomorrow,

Love Froogs xxx

  2. I have a tin of that crabmeat lurking in the cupboard and have been wondering what I could do with it, so that idea is very timely.

I thought of you this evening as my OH has been watching a programme on BBC4 with Michael Portillo travelling around Cornwall on the trains. I only had half an eye on it, but what I saw was interesting. I haven't been to Cornwall since I was a teenager so I should be heading back in the next decade or two. We are going to Yorkshire this year.

    Love the photos!

  3. Where to start? I live right on the edge of Edinburgh so right by hills, lochs and trees, lovely peaceful walks. But 30 minutes by bus to the centre of the city, and you're surrounded by romantic history! I'd love to be able to show you round.

  4. Durham Cathedral. Perhaps not as ancient, but breathtaking and intimate at the same time. Let me know if you are up here, I would love to introduce you to my most favourite place on the planet.

  5. Well I live right outside a SSSi (Risley Moss) but it's not very large and that's about all in the area apart from the same old places. No sea, which I would love.

Your food looks lovely and colourful, all but the crab which I don't like. I'd just do without that and eat the rest!

  6. Love crab cakes! But a tin of crab is about $4 here…which is a bit 'spensive. No ancient sites but we have the absolute best beaches and weather and food and people. Visuals on my blog is necessary x

  7. Hi Froogs,
Since the city I live in is only about 80 yrs old, we don't have much in the way of ancient things to see…
We do, however, have lots of snow capped mountains, waterfalls, forests and wild animals. Stunning scenerey only minutes from town.
    Yummy lunch!

  8. Lovely looking lunch. Near me we have Healey Dell and the fairy chapel, where some man was cursed by a witch and saved by faries (or something like that). Never seen a fairy there sadly, they have probably abandoned us as they are so disgusted by consumerism.

  9. Ancient for us is 200 years - so I would take you up to Monticello & The Poplars, estates of Thomas Jefferson. Then drive down the Blue Ridge Parkway, stopping to take hikes or picnics along the way. 🙂

  10. There is an old castle in the neighbourhood where we take all our guests and Couchsurfers, and everybody loves the sight over Germany, Switzerland and Alsace. We are used to having people around, so if one day you wanted to have a frugal holiday at our place, you would be much welcome !

  11. Hi,

We have lots of ancient sites too. One of which is Pentre Ifon Burial Chamber. A really atmospheric place.http://cadw.wales.gov.uk/daysout/pentreifanburialchamber/?lang=en
We buy the “lazy garlic/chilli/ginger” too. When D. first bought it I thought he was being lazy and unfrugal! But, it does last forever!

  12. I hate to show off- but here in Northern Ireland we're hip deep in ancient stuff! My favorite is Ballynoe Stone Circle near Downpatrick- Its not well known so usually we get it to ourselves! Its in a lovely wee fold of valley at the foot of the Mourne Mountains…
    Love the blog-
