Beefy bacon bombs in a Chasseur sauce

Hello Dear Reader,

DB has a theory that all food is better if you add bacon. He also believes that the best thing for a bacon sandwich is more bacon. He has a point.

Our local butchers sells 24 frozen beef meats balls for 99p! You really ought to live where I live and I bought a pack of smoky streaky bacon for 99p in Aldi. This is more than enough for four portions of my beefy bacon balls in a Chasseur sauce.

You will need for the sauce

50g butter
1 finely chopped courgette, pepper, onion and 8 finely chopped mushrooms,
1 tin of chopped tomatoes
3 finely sliced carrots
1 glass of wine
300ml of stock - I used a cube and water
1 teaspoon of chopped garlic
2 teaspoons of tomato puree/paste
1 scant teaspoon of corn flour.

Pasta
Meatballs
Streaky bacon.

Set the slow cooker to low.

Heat a pan with butter.
Add the courgette, mushrooms, pepper and onion.
Blend in the corn flour.
Add to the slow cooker.
Add the rest of the ingredients and stir.
This will bubble away all day.

Wrap the bacon around the meat balls, cover and leave in the fridge until you get in from work.

When you get home, set the slow cooker to high and cook the meat balls.

Add them to the sauce in the slow cooker. Remove a ladle full of sauce from the slow cooker and de-glaze the frying pan with this and then add that back to the slow cooker.

Leave these to bubble away for 30 minutes. In that time, cook the pasta.

Cook and drain the pasta, stir through a tiny bit of butter and then add to the meat and sauce.

Give it a good stir to coat the pasta.

 Totally lovely!

Easily serves four meals, some for tonight and some for lunch tomorrow.

This is really a poor person's version of a chasseur when we don't have any steak!

Try these

I still haven't used my oven and everything is getting cooked in my crockpot! This has got to be saving me money!

Until tomorrow,

  1. Oh my! I'm literally drooling at that recipe especially the photo. Suddenly my very plain medallion rump steaks with mash, veg and gravy just isn't cutting the mustard. Oh, the medallion steaks were a super bargain from a local store; I thought they would be a treat. Can I come to yours instead please?

  2. This looks divine. Sadly, I can't eat it at the moment because I am still on the Dukan Diet, and don't dare cook something this tasty for the rest of the family! It would be too cruel. I will make a mental note to treat myself to this meal when I'm eating normally again. Can't wait!

  3. Those meatballs are an amazing price and the recipe looks completely delicious. Your DB sounds very like my DH; he loves. loves, loves bacon. His favourite sandwich is bacon and fried onions.

  5. I'm drooling and I don't often eat meat! Pasta is wonderful. It can be elegant, is cheap and oh so comforting!

Keep up the good work Froogs!

  8. A 'to do' recipe. The family would love it. I can't believe how cheap food is for you. You can use ingredients that are a fraction of the price I can get them for. In Australia prices for everything have been skyrocketing for quite some time.

  9. The prices you quote are amazing. I made beef rissoles with bacon for my family last night. However, my mother refuses to eat pasta and many other foods. It makes life a challenge.

Direct question Froogs- I am allergic to a number of foods. The main allergy is egg yolk and seafood. Most of the time I cope but at present I am so resentful. Any suggestions? It even boils down to the bread I can eat. Unlike many I eat white wheat bread to avoid the grains I cannot eat.
