Tackling debt and money head on!!!

Hello Dear Reader,

I've been to the slimming club tonight and I'm as inspired by the honesty of why people are not losing weight as I am with the weight loss. To be honest, I'm quite good at sticking to something and allowing myself the odd bit of cheese or a sweet as a small treat and when I'm focused I am totally 'on it'! I learned that from paying off debt, I took it head on and mustered up all my discipline every day and totally stuck at it. Now, I'm comfortable, I can make measured and budgeted purchases. (I bought DB a new bike at the weekend and I just loved being able to do that as I'd saved the money to get it for him.)

In the main, I know I'm preaching to the choir but I'm always aware that you dear reader, may have searched online for help or advice about tackling debt and some how you arrived here. I don't just write here but write for other websites too.

Take a look here at - Three simple steps to tackle debt.

as we've got one coming up this weekend, take a look at Bank Holidays Don't Mean a Trip to the Bank

and as everyone needs to look at their budget every now and then Take time to budget

And!!!! As there's a school half term break next week think about how you can stretch the fun without stretching the budget

School holiday part 1.

School holiday part 2.

Finally, think about how you keep a rein on the purse string and are literally The Chancellor of your own exchequer.

I hope you find any of this useful. You can leave a comment here and let me know if you don't want it published. You can use the contact details above to get in touch with me. I know some of you are waiting to hear back and I will take time in my half term to answer in more detail.

I always love hearing from you and feel free to get in touch.

Happy reading and I'll be back tomorrow,

Oh.....the slimming club? I lost another 1.5lbs so 9lbs down in total. I hope to be a stone (14lbs) lighter by the end of June. Like paying down debt or controlling a budget, I know it can be done and I also know that it takes time and I have to stick at it.

Love Froogs xxxxx

  2. Hi Jane,

as always, these are my favourite type of post - the ones that remind us to keep our eye on the ball. You mention a few times in the linked pieces that people use time poverty as an excuse. When my kids used to complain about chores I drew a pie chart that showed the extremely tiny sliver of time they spent doing chores, compared to the gigantic amount of free time that was left over.

It's also useful to do this with budgeting. In an average week I spend about 47 hours working, including a bit of travel time. I spend about 63 hours sleeping and 3 hours shopping and running errands. Allow 14 hours a week for cooking and housework. There are 168 hours in a week, so I'm left with a big 45 hours a week to as I please! So if I told myself I didn't have time to budget that would be bollocks! I actually look at my bank accounts every morning after a cup of tea because I like to keep track of what's coming in and out so there are no surprises. I get a thrill every time the mortgage gets lower, or a bit of interest goes into my internet accounts!

  3. Good luck with your slimming. That sounds so much better than trying to lose weight!

  4. Congratulations on your continued weight loss. Monday is Memorial Day for us in the states, so a lovely 3 day weekend planned. It is also the opening for many outdoor concert series. There are 5 to choose from this weekend all within a 20 mile radius. I am thinking the New Orleans Jazz in a nearby town is perfect for a Saturday evening and the music on the Winery Patio sound perfect for a Sunday afternoon. The weather is to be beautiful so I will do wash and hang outside. Hubby hopes to open the pool this week and 2 iron chairs need a painting and the deck a sprucing up. I planted the planters last weekend. I bought the chairs last year at an auction for $10 for a pair. They have beautiful iron work designs and I cut wood for the seat repairs and made cushions. I just love them. They are quite heavy and I made the mistake of leaving them out all winter unprotected so they will need painting and a new seat. Still a minimal expense for 2 beautiful comfy chairs. Meals will be grilled chicken and salads. This weekend will be eventful, enjoyable and very frugal. Now that the holiday weekend is planned out I just have to make it through the week :) Wishing you continued success on your healthy eating weight loss and enjoy your bank holiday.

  6. Well done on the slimming! One of the successes to our debt management was to keep good accounts. Its boring and time consuming but you soon find and get a thrill from identifying those un-noticed expenses and so good to tackle them. Just reduced mobile phone bills from £28 per month to £9 per month for next 12 months!

    1. I'm on a contract with Vodafone and pay £8 a month for unlimited texts and 3 hours of phone calls per month. When my contract came to an end, they tried telling me the monthly amount would need to be increased. When I threatened to go elsewhere, they kept it at £8 per month.

  7. I am in a similar situation. At this age, however, my weight needs a tad more attention to keep it where I want. Like finances, (and my grades in college, my spare time, )I am in control. As there are precious little opportunities in this life to be in total control, I take them when I can. If you don't mind, however, I am going to continue to shamelessly glom all the encouragement I can from your blog as I push my weight back down. Now, off for my morning run.

  10. I was relieved to read you are continuing to diet and go to Slimming World as in your last post it sounded like you had decided to stop. This didn't sound like the Jane I have been following for ages so I thought maybe something had happened to make you lose heart. I am pleased, not only for your sake but also mine. I am into my 4th week using My Fitness Pal to count my calories and I am also reading your recipes for help. It feels like I am doing it with a pal. Good luck to us!
