An almost free lunch.

The cheapest place to buy diesel is at the supermarket and the most convenient to my journey is run by Tesco. I save their points with the clubcard and about once every month or so, they send me £5 in Clubcard vouchers. I then save them until I have £10 of voucher. If you then log onto the Tesco clubcard website, you can treble the value of these by exchanging them for rewards voucher. I changed my £10 of vouchers, that could be spend on £10 of goods in Tesco for £30 of Cafe Rouge vouchers.

I can’t actually remember the last time Dearly Beloved and I went out to a restaurant, it certainly wasn’t this year, and it wasn’t any time last year so it was probably 2009! It was lovely! I had a salad with chicken, bacon and egg and DB had a steak. It cost us £3.25 for a litre bottle of sparkling water and the diesel to get there!

Not free, not entirely frugal but what a treat to sit down, have some one else do the cooking and more importantly……someone else do the washing up! I noticed other people paying with their Tesco reward vouchers and I will go back when I’ve saved some more.

I’ve had a word with myself!!!

I have previously been and am currently as size 16/18 but was a size 12 for most of my adult life. I went up to a size 16 and then by following the Weight Watchers point system, lost weight and became a size 10/12. I spent almost three years at that size and in that time, I religiously counted every point I ate. I weighed every portion, only ever drank 125ml of wine in a sitting (2 points) and at my most zealous, weighed 10 stone. I don’t remember the ‘fuck this’ moment but it certainly happened and I started eating again. I have a whole series of clothes ranging from a size 10 to size 16.

After the Easter holiday, I opened the huge bottom drawer at the base of my antique wardrobe, and took out a whole bunch of lightweight clothes that I bought last year. I had some knee length shorts, some linen trousers, some tunic tops and they were loose fitting last year. This year I can just about get half a knocker in the tops and a quarter of a backside in the trousers. I tried on numerous clothes to go on an important meeting on Thursday and nothing fitted. So the ‘fuck this’ moment has resulted in a ‘oh fuck!’ situation. I suppose this is what I did to get into debt and it took a massive wake up moment to say ‘no more’ and change my life.

You all know I love to cook and love to eat. You may have noticed that I haven’t been blogging ‘food’…..it’s because I’ve stopped eating it! I am not going back to Weight Watchers or any other saddo club where desperate people discuss a ‘bad week’ (usually a Mars bar binge) or a ‘good week’ as I always felt no one was really taking it seriously. It true ‘Froogs’ style; I’m an all or nothing kind of person. The walks have stepped up and the portions have drastically scaled down. To be honest, I’ve mainly eaten steamed or raw plain vegetables and very lean protein and that’s not exciting, frugal or interesting to read about.

Lunches just look like this! 1400 calories of low fat and tonnes of fresh unadulterated veg. I remember the time when I cut up the credit card, cancelled the overdraft and organised my debt snowball plan. To begin with, it felt Draconian and, with all cold turkey situations, it was tough. I know this is a life long plan that will lead towards retiring at what is considered a normal age to retire, instead of 70 and having a debt free life and savings. This week has had a lot of thinking about my size and implications for my health. We all have a ‘healthy weight’. It’s usually the weight we were for most of our lives. For me, it’s size 12/14.This means you’ll be seeing a lot more of money saving around the house and garden, me busy making things and not cooking, lots more of the walking and if you don’t mind, I won’t be documenting the weight loss. I’ve no idea if going it alone is going to be successful.

I recently tried to return to the Weight Watchers plan and after the initial 5lbs of weight loss, I didn’t lose anything at all, even though I stuck at it for well over six weeks…………..funnily enough, that resulted in another ‘fuck this’ moment. I’m not and never have been unhappy with what I look like. You all know I’ve placed lots of photos of myself on the blog and I’m happy enough with who I am. I certainly had an epiphany when I could no longer fit into the biggest clothes I’ve ever owned. That was my line in the sand moment and I’m not prepared to cross it and go and buy size 18 clothes. For me, that’s a step too far.

I’ll be off for lots of long walks this weekend, there won’t be a picnic nor any cake on the return. Sorry about the lack of food; I’ll be sharing the other parts of my money saving life. The biggest money saving hope is that I will get back into the clothes I bought last year!

Low tech solution to a thirsty garden

Ta da! A bin and it works. I’ve already watered the garden. The bin was cheaper than any water butt I could find and it is also the frugal solution. My washing machine uses 44 litres of water for every load and now I can reuse every drop. I now recycle the shower water, sink water for the toilets and now I can include the washing machine water. I shall only do this when my water butt is empty and I fully intend buying as many water butts as I can afford. I think it is crazy that we wash our clothes, flush our loo and water our garden with pure drinking water. Call me weird if you want, but I’m thrilled that in my very small way I’m sticking two fingers up to South West Water and saving the planet, albeit in a tiny way.

Now the washing machine is just ending the second wash, I’m now going to water the shrubs and plants which are already wilting in the heat. Added later for ‘Saving for Travel’ - it really is as simple as it looks, I just hooked the waste pipe into the bin and then ran the washing machine. I then bucket it into the garden. Added even later……I use ecover, which does not damage the garden and the wash water and the rinse water is mixed and I only use one tablet per wash. Also I will add, my mum washed all our clothes in Tide and all the water on our fruit and veg, maybe some time Persil or Ariel…………..and by the fact that I was fed and I’m still alive; I didn’t die, nor did the plants which the water was tipped over.

Until tomorrow,

More gardens, this time, mine.

It’s been a long evening. Home from work and cooking supper. Nothing worth blogging about..quorn sausages, mash and veggies with gravy. I made four meals and two will be ‘dinged’ tomorrow night as I have to travel for work and I’m not sure when I’ll get home. I must say, all the carrying of water up and down the stairs is keeping me fit. I’m now investigating setting up a water butt in my utility room and hooking the washing machine pipe straight into it so I can save the water for the garden. I only use eco soap so it won’t harm the garden. As soon as I sort something out, you’ll be the first to know. In the meantime, I’m holding out with the laundry for as long as possible so I can recycle the water when I next get round to getting it washed.

My plants are thriving on grey water. It’s been so dry that I’ve had to water them every day. Not having anywhere to ‘dig’ means I grow in pots, or flashy bags in wicker wrappers. From my experiments last year, everything grew well in a big cheap plastic pot and not so well in bags. Cheap plastic pots it is then. Tonight, I transplanted the butternut squash, cucumbers and courgettes, out of the wee pots where they have grown from seed into their large permanent pots in the poly tunnel. Last year I failed miserably as I tried using grow bags. Now the plants have deep, compost with added manure and can form deep roots, the poly tunnel with protect them from the cold and I just might get more than courgettes. I’ve also put beetroot seeds in and the potatoes have been ‘earthed up’. It’s so easy to do when you use potato bags, just chuck it in on top, give the bags a gently shake and the green leave pop their tips through. Repeat the process until the garden compost is at the top of the bag and keep well watered.

As usual, we went out for our evening walk but later than usual. We spent quite a while just sitting and chatting in the garden. We’re both worried about Dearly Beloved either losing his job or facing a massive pay cut alongside me possibly losing a chunk of my income due to having to make a greater contribution to my own pension, just to keep the level I have. Life is full of challenges and it’s more important than ever to enjoy the simplest moments such as planting out, watering the garden or chatting with loved ones. We know we can’t afford to stay in this house forever and we’ll have to find somewhere small as soon as we’re out of our mortgage agreement, however, whilst we’re here; I’m going to enjoy my garden.

(p.s for Mary - I stand to lose approx £100 a month from the pension alteration, that will be devastating for us, especially if DB either loses his job or, at best, has a pay cut. Everything gets more and more expensive and salaries stay the same or in our case, decrease.)

Hey big spenders!

Hello again,

My day started with us both standing in a big blue box (not at the same time) and saving our water, we watered our flowers, veggies and hanging baskets. I washed my hair today (don’t fret….I use Faith in Nature, so all eco) , which took twice as much water as yesterday. I’m not sure how this is going to work when I’ve got seconds to spare as I have to leave for work at 6.30 am? I may only get to save water at the weekends or I’ll have to get up even earlier.

We had a fun morning as the local cricket club had a car boot sale this morning. After all the shenanigans of bucketting water around the house and garden, we arrived at 10.30 to find the sale in full swing. I bought…..

a red bucket for 10p, it will be all part of my water and money saving plan.

I bought a 50cm high shrub, exactly the same as the one in the photo. I paid £2.50 for that.

I bought a foxglove for £1.

I also bought a kilo of rhubarb for £1……………delicious stewed and eaten with custard. I’m trying to fill the garden with beautiful plants and I’m obviously doing that by spending as little money as possible. The foxgloves grow really well in a shady spot and my ‘front’ garden is north facing, spends most of the day in shade and will look wonderful with a border backed with tall foxgloves. The shrub/Weigela Florida Variegata will thrive in the warm sunny front garden which is in full sun, all day long. I think I had a good morning for £4.60. What have been your star purchases from jumble sales or car boot sales recently?

Recycling grey water

Old toy box used for catching water whilst I showered.

Hi Everyone,

I know some of you will go on and on about pathogen and other issues, but those of us who remember previous droughts, hose pipe bans and the water being turned off for hours of the day, remember putting our bath water on our veggie patches and we didn’t die!!! But then again, we ate lard, didn’t use sunblock, ate red meat, rode out bikes without helmets, let the kids go anywhere and do any thing, kids amused themselves, there were no sell by or use by dates, we didn’t wash so often, we didn’t have glossy daily washed, we occasionally smelt a bit sweaty, we bought veggies with dirt on them, we cut the mould off the cheese and ate the cheese, the same with the bread and you know what, we didn’t die!

My mother used to have a Hotpoint top loader and she used to stop it and start it on a pumping out the water cycle into an old galvanised bin, then she used to bucket the water into watering cans and water the veggie garden. Our garden grew fruit and veg and the lawn was allowed to brown and die. When we had shared baths, one out and the next one in the same water; the water was scooped out in buckets and onto the garden. We used to have a scum on that water by the time the last one came out. We didn’t bath every day, in fact weekly, with a strip wash in between. Hair was washed over the kitchen sink on a Sunday night and dried in front of the Rayburn which was lit to get the water hot. In the summer time, when it was too hot for the Rayburn to be lit, we used a Calor gas cooker in the ‘back kitchen’. The ‘front kitchen’ was actually the dining room and ‘front room’ rolled into one. In the winter, we lived in there. Washing lines ran from one side of the room to the other and we would often sit down to dinner, with dad’s Y-Fronts over our heads! My mum would just die if she knew I was telling you all this! Fortunately, even though she’s been to the over 60’s classes at the library, she can’t quite fathom the internet and has no home access to it.

As my water butt is all but empty, and I’m being careful with money so haven’t bought any more yet. I’m reusing all the water. I put a bowl under every tap in the house. The downstairs loo, the upstairs bathroom and the kitchen sink. Every time we run the tap, or wash out a cup, I save the water. I then allow it to cool and pour it into watering cans and water the garden. Today, we started doing that with our shower water.

The results of a five minute shower, we are far too frugal to even own a power shower, and this filled two watering cans. We both saved and reused our shower water this morning.

I use the kids’ old toy boxes to stack laundry in. Today,we stood in them as we each had out shower. We actually used two watering cans each when we had out showers. After showering, we tipped the water into the watering cans, allowed them to cool and then watered the garden. I have planted Foxgloves and have split and transplanted phormiums and they need a lot of water until the roots establish themselves. The hanging baskets also need watering every day and they too had some shower water.

I thought I would show the view through my living room window. The house is south facing, with huge picture windows on the south side and the dogs laze on the sofa at the back window to stay away from the heat. By eight this morning, the garden was already being baked and Bob and Scruff had already taken up residence in the shade.

My love and prayers to all of you this Easter, and I’ll see you all again tomorrow,

Don’t replace, renovate instead.

Downstairs loo cabinet, after the ‘paint job’

Hello everyone,

Sorry I didn’t blog yesterday, the day was rounded off with Foster Mummy and Man Wonderful coming over for supper. They were just what I needed after a ‘funny old day’ and they have left me feeling ‘treasured’.The dogs had a play date when Max came too. It was a delight to have good friends over for supper who enjoy the simple things if life and take us how they find us.

Today has been a fruitful day of doing up what we have. I have painted the bathroom and the downstairs loo. The cabinet came with the house as was 1970’s orange pine. I had some Farrow and Ball French Grey paint so I gave it a couple of coats of that. I’ve been cleaning and getting spare rooms ready as the ‘kids’ are home tomorrow. I got a bargain from Aldi when I last went of a boned out, stuffed and prepared turkey for £7.99 and as I have five to feed tomorrow, it will be just right. If there’s anything left, I’ll be doing creative things with the leftovers.

The bathroom and loo have been rejuvenated, we didn’t need to buy any paint for those rooms and we just used what we had. Our front gate is a rusty mess and needed some work. Dearly Beloved took it off the hinges for me and scraped all the rust off with a wire brush and left me to paint them. We did have to buy some Hammerite paint for the gate and the small tin we bought still has plenty left for any touch up work, or in case I’ve missed anything.

Here’s the before.

Here’s the after.

Here’s Froogs, busy as ever and enjoying any work that requires being out in the sun. So, do tell, what have you renovated recently to save you from buying new?

Until tomorrow,

Froogsxx

I like big butts!

It’s water bill time again!!! Oh the joys of it all. Every three months I feel the need to plot and plan as many ways as possible to not have to buy my water from South West Water. I’ve been very frugal with water this quarter and we’ve used 21 cubic meters of water. I now have a bowl under every tap, even if we run the tap to get hot water, we save the water. Even if we just wash our hands, we save the water. I’ve had no more than a bath a fortnight and we just leave the car to sit in it’s own filth. Clothes are sniffed, if they have no smell, then we carry on wearing them. Towels are thrown over the banister and used over and over. Toilets are never flushed with brand new water, but we used second hand water. Even with all that water scrimping and being really really good. Our quarterly bill was still £105.07! PLEASE!!

Now I sit and start to work out the costs of butts, pumps and grey water systems. My neighbour has six water butts in tandem next to his bungalow with an electric pump inside the house and has a header tank in his loft, which he pumps the rain water into. I have serious big butt envy. I’m going to put a water butt on a stand in my utility room and then pump the water from the machine in that and use that too, especially as I need to keep water for the garden.

We all have those, if I won the lottery moments and mine would be to ‘green’ my house. I would produce my own energy and harvest my own water for everything but drinking and stop paying so much for utilities. If any of you readers have a grey water system, then share the know how with the rest of us. I’m off for a sunbathe and a dream of big butts!

Until tomorrow,

Froogs xxxxx

Make do and paint!

I had a ‘good wife’ (though I’m not married) day today. Everything is cleaned, so no cleaning to do. The gardening has been done; what needed planting is planted. I moved onto indoor jobs. I’ve started on the painting. I washed down walls, sanded down wood work in the upstairs bathroom and downstair loo. I’ve got two coats of paint onto the loo walls and I’ve put one coat onto the wood surfaces. I’m feeling very proud of myself. I’ve dug the old paint out of the garage and it will have to do. I don’t have any gloss for the wood work but the brilliant white ‘silk’ paint covers wood and metal, so it says, and will do just fine for the wood work. The cabinet will be painted ‘French Grey’, as is my hall table and my bedside drawers, and anything else that needs a coat of paint until I use up all of the paint! I won’t be wasting any.

I deserve a drink……………..pimms anybody?

Froogs in her summer house/Hillside Inn.

Well alright, you’ve got me there. I have a cheaper alternative. Austin’s from Aldi. All the supermarkets seem to be making their own version of Pimms, along with some Aldi lemonade, which tastes remarkably like Schweppes. It’s an indulgence at almost £5 a bottle, but what a treat after a long way on a paint roller!

Thanks for all the ‘wedding’ comments. I wish them a long and happy marriage and a lovely day but I will be sticking to my ground and I’m afraid we won’t be going. We don’t feel bad, we’re just related and we get invited out of polite tradition; the most important people to them will be their immediate family and friends.

So bloggettes? What do you substitute with a cheaper alternative and what can you just not substitute?

It’s all gone to pot!

I’ve spent today in the garden and my scorched and sun blockless face will suffer later! I’ve recycled the hanging baskets and they are now on their fifth year, the cardboard inserts were from Trago…………like Poundland but cheaper. The plants are from Aldi. I always ignore the ‘bedding plant’ signs and put them in baskets and pots. I buy French Marigolds to range in pots amongst the veggies to keep flies off them, plus the splash of gold is lovely. This now means I have to be vigilant for frost and dash the baskets into the poly tunnel if any is imminent.

We bought 100 summer flowering bulbs for £1, and I’m starting them off in pots so I’ll have some ideas of what they are and where to go. If you read this DB……………they are for you! You were so taken with the flowers in your mum’s garden and mentioned that we should have more flowers. Let’s hope most of them flower, if not this year, then next. The lettuce have been grown from seed and are now outside. I have put seed into more pots for lettuce later on.

I thought I would share the heat hazed view with you all. The bottom of my garden is still a mess. There used to be a tree blocking the view and the lack of view put off every buyer who came to our house. Now I have a view to sell with the house. We sold all of the wood too which paid for part of the cost of having the tree down. The bottom of the garden has a real woodland feel to it (even without the tree!) and it covered in bluebells. It’s lovely to be able to pick them and have them in the house……….I’m allowed, they’re mine.

I’ve weeded more of another border today and did battle with a huge red Phormium which I need to divide and spread around the borders, I’m also going to do the same with ornamental grasses and try and make what’s already there go further. Photos another day.

I’m off to knit in the late afternoon sun and enjoy where I live.
