Hello Dear Reader,
That got your attention! It’s been a steady 27 in the shade and 33 out in the sun and I’ve been gardening almost naked………….well, bikini and wellies! Sunbathe and get the work done all in one! Don’t worry about the neighbours…..no one can see into our garden. I’ve finished another border and have the weed proof membrane down.
It’s cooler now and we’re indoors painting. Dearly Beloved has two coats of white onto the ceiling and now he’s onto the walls. I need to get another coat of gloss onto the skirting boards. I’ve washed more curtains and blankets from the airing cupboard. Dearly Beloved’s bike is back from the bike shop after a service and some new gears and new tyre - even our bikes get the make do and mend treatment and keep going. It’s all nifty and thrifty here!
This Sunday - it’s Open Farm Sunday and HERE is the link to all the farms open in Devon and South East Cornwall. It’s a great fun day out and great for families with children. We won’t be going but want to promote this as without our wonderful British farmers, we wouldn’t have the amazing food that we all love so much.
I used a random number generator and it selected Thrift Wizard as the winner. If she could contact me by this time tomorrow, then I will send her the Ark with animals!
I’m off to do some more painting and I’ll see you all tomorrow!

Frugal Weight loss and Frugal Home Renovation
Hello Dear Reader,
If any of you have ever read ‘Bitchcakes’ blog, then my in the gym bathroom pose will be familiar. I don’t actually have a deformed arse but my pose makes me look as if I do. I’m now 1.5 stone lighter or 21 English pounds lighter. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m getting there. I’ll take my proper camera next time so I can document the difference as time goes by. Apologies for the grainy pictures but my ever so frugal and aging i-phone was all I had with me.
I’ve spent the day dashing in and out of the house with laundry as I dried it outside and have washed quilts and curtains. We also investigated wood chips and found 6 cubic metres for £80 and that includes delivery. We bought weed blocking membrane for 50p a running metre and as usual we found it cheaper than anywhere in Trago. We also popped into the wholesale butchers and found yet more sirloin steak for £1 each (it’s Tesco finest before it’s re-labelled!).
I’ve then got onto the living room. This is the before but don’t be too expectant, it will be painted exactly the same colour again…..Skimming stone. I have one and a half pots in the garage and bought one more. I have all the undercoat, gloss, brushes, white spirit that I could need and the pot of paint is the only cost to the redecoration of the room. Whilst I’ve been working inside, Dearly Beloved has carried on in the garden and is steadily working his way through the borders.
Here’s the other side of the room with the view from our patio doors. All the furniture went to people who wanted it as I gave it away on Freecycle……………that now gives me exactly one week to decorate the entire room. I’m going to use the lounge curtains in my bedroom and the bedroom curtains in the spare room/sewing room and office. Sometimes just moving curtains around can refresh rooms. I shall investigate making new curtains when the suite of furniture is here but it they will probably be neutral and simple.
In between, I’ve been cooking, marking exams and taking five minutes here and there to sit in the sunshine. No more nails? I’ll have no more nails when I’m done with the decorating! I’m off on my hands and knees again to complete sanding the skirting boards and will get one coat of undercoat onto the woodwork and radiator before the day is out!
Over to you Dear Reader, who uses Freecycle? Anyone else in the process of house renovation on the cheap? Is anyone trying to lose weight and get fit on a budget?
See you tomorrow,

Dog tired!
In the jungle, the mighty jungle!
Hello Dear Reader,
Gardening is over rated! I’m of the opinion that it’s outdoor house work that gets in the way of hobbies and relaxation! Dearly Beloved has been at some tree roots with a pick axe and the language was not pretty! I’m not keen on cold, wind or rain so that leaves me with a very small window of opportunity for any gardening at all. On top of that, I suffer from random joint pain whenever I get cold and digging has left me with repetitive pissed off with gardening syndrome! Any way, it has to be done.
If you’ve ever watched the TV programmes where they can’t sell their houses, it’s usually because they are untidy and general maintenance has been allowed to slip. We still want to sell our house and move to somewhere much smaller and we need to keep our home and garden in good order until a convenient time to sell and move on. So far, we’ve weeded one bed and we are in the process of digging up shrubs and moving them around. I don’t have much money for this so it’s work on a tiny budget!
We have some flowering grassy stuff which we have dug up and divided into four and we will spread them around the back of the borders as they grown to around five feet high. (That’s not weed membrane but we have to cover up bare earth or Dolly digs it up and brings all the dirt into the house). We’ll plant and mulch this area this week so come back and see what I do. I’ll also pull the rest of the weeds out too…………I know you saw them.
I split the two purply plants (you can tell I know what I’m on about here………..not!) and divided them. I also divided an agapathus into three (it still had the label stuck in the ground) and moved them around too. I also divided the peony plant and divided that. I may not know about plants but I do know how to make what I have go round. Spot the dogs?
The borders haven’t been touched since last year and they are a mass of weeds. We enjoyed the bluebells which self seeded and there are some bulbs in the ground for next spring. Where we have cleared some space, we’ll be moving shrubs around to give them some space to grow. I have Hydrangeas in pots that I’ve grown from cuttings and are big enough to put in the ground. Our only expense will be weed inhibiting membrane and mulch of some sort. We’re investigating where we can buy it wholesale in dumpy bags and we’ll go and collect it if it’s cheaper.
Here’s a section that we haven’t tackled yet. It’s slow going as it’s so wet and we are dragging ourselves through this as we’d both rather be doing something we like instead. We carry on as it will be lovely when it’s finished.
We’ve dug up and weeded the edges of all the lawns and they are much tidier. Spot the dog? The azalea had outgrown the space it was in so it’s being moved. We’ve also been on hands and knees and pulled the weeds out of the paths.
We have hedges to cut, the shed and deck to stain and fruit trees and fruit bushes to plant. Let’s hope the ibuleve holds out on my aching hips and the rain holds off long enough for us to get this done. I hereby declare and promise that I will never let the garden get into this state ever again!
Next property? Two bed terraced cottage or two bed bungalow with small garden. We will get there!
Until tomorrow,

Saving your pennies………….thanks to thrifty Dearly Beloved
The total was surprising. £76.37 of pennies from the bottom of his pockets.
Once the machine has counted your money, you are issued with a ticket to spend in store. We stocked up on laundry soap, pet food, toiletries, tea and coffee, dishwasher tablets, cooking oil, hair colourant and toothpaste. We made sure we bought the products on offer and saved a whole load of money buying bulk products such as extra large boxes of tea bags.
What makes you happy?
Hello Dear Reader,
I don’t have much money. It’s a choice……I give it all to Santander bank to pay off my mortgage as fast as I can. I don’t have what’s called a disposable income. Consequently, there are many things that I don’t do any more and that’s my choice. I don’t go to the cinema or theatre, I don’t eat in restaurants, I buy what I need and not what I want. I furnish my house from the freeads and freecycle and do you know what? I couldn’t be happier.
Dearly Beloved and I have spent the weekend in the garden. We’re knee deep in weeds from the very wet spring and we’ve dug up shrubs and divided plants to move them around. We’ve sat and chatted in the sunshine, drunk pots of tea and dozed in deck chairs in the afternoon sun. We’ve had a lovely afternoon with our loveliest friends with cake and chatter. It’s days like this that make me truly value everything I have.
We haven’t spent the weekend in the car visiting attractions or places of history, we haven’t been to hidden cliff top cafes or surf shacks for breakfast. We haven’t set foot in a shop or spent any money. Life is very very simple when you don’t have any money as you strip your life back to what is truly important. Friends, family and the simple life.
Our vision is to downsize and we will. Our vision is to be mortgage free and we will be one day. Our vision is to have more time for the simple pleasures of walking, cycling, being outside, reading and being creative. Dearly Beloved and I have the rest of the week off work and I’ll be back each day to share our simple pleasures of the quiet life that we lead.
I’ll also be back with photographs of the finished garden. It will take us all week but the garden will be tidy for the summer season and we’ll have developed the borders without spending any money.
Over to you Dear Reader. What’s important? What doesn’t matter? What does the simple life mean to you?
Finally, hop back to yesterday’s blog and enter the giveaway for the lovely Danish toy Noah’s Ark!

Noah’s Ark Giveaway from Zulily.com
Hello Dear Reader,
You’ve got to love Noah! No one believed him but he followed his beliefs and did what was right when everyone thought he was crazy and ignored him!
This lovely toy was sent to me to review and give away by the website www.zulily.com. I was asked to select any thing to the value of £50 for a review of the website. I went and had a look and it’s of the same quality and ilk as ‘not on the high street’. If you were looking for something different for yourself or your children then it’s a great website. I love the dressing up clothes and some of the clothes for children were unusual and I’ve not seen anything like them before. I could have picked some clothes but I love wooden toys or infact, any toys that all children to create their own narrative and these little animals on their ark can have any story they want them to have.
I’m giving them away! These can go anywhere in the world and here are the T&Cs!!!
1. You must be a follower which means when I click on your link in your comment I will clearly be able to see that you are a follower of Frugal Queen.
2. You must leave a comment.
3. If you have a Facebook account, I would love you to link this to your Facebook page and ask people to come over to my blog.
4. If you have a twitter account, I would also like you to Tweet this and ask people to retweet so people come over to my blog.
5. The draw will be on the 31st of May and you will need to email me on that day if you have won…..if you don’t I will draw another name.
I’m going to leave this blog post up for two days and I’ll link it for the next seven days. This will also feature in all of my posts for the next seven days. The draw will be on Friday 31st May and will be posted on the next day.
Over to you Dear Reader………….sign up, Facebook this and Tweet and retweet please. If you could put a link on your blog, then that would be helpful. I really want this beautiful toy to go to some children who will love the story of Noah just as I do. When you leave a comment it would be great if you could mention where you are……………just the county, state or district will do.
This toy was given to me by Zulily but my thoughts on their website are my own and I genuinely thought their products were different and some are fascinating!
Until tomorrow,

I must say that I approve of frugal shopping!
Spicy Tortilla wraps £1 - again, will be used for lunches and I’ll wrap left over meats and salad.
10 packs of Chicken stock cubes £1 and 2 jumbo packs of veggies stock cubes for 75p each.
5 packs of marinade £1 - 20p each
The Maggi sauce mixes were 6 for £1
The mug shots were 33p each and are great to take to lunch so either of us can have something hot - we usually add something of this nature to some leftovers and salad - or just have cous cous and salad.
8 tins of mandarin segments for £1 - great for Weight Watchers as they are in juice and have no points.
28 X 25g bags of peanuts and cranberries and pineapple and cashews for 12p a bag. A great mid morning snack to keep anyone going and would be great for children to have as a snack for after school . Also just 3 weight watchers points per bag.
6 500g bags of pasta for £1.
So when shopping, I get cash back on lots of purchases, I bulk buy from a wholesale local butcher, use Lidl and Aldi for weekly top ups such as veggies and milk and I buy dry goods from Approved Food. I order from the twice a year but keep up to date with their special offers via their link on Facebook.
Over to you Dear Reader. Who uses Approved Foods to top up their stock cupboards and stretch their family budgets? Over to readers in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and America - do you have food discount websites or stores?
Until tomorrow,

Mary’s queen of Liskeard’s high street!
Hello Dear Reader,
Liskeard bid for and won money from the government to help them revitalise the heart of the town centre. There are many reasons for the decline of small market towns and it isn’t all down to the out of town shops. Mary Portas and her expertise was welcomed and I look forward to hearing the advice she gace. I’m no Mary Portas but I do guard my purse and if anyone asked for my advice on how I could be persuaded to part with my money, this is what I would say.
If you want people to shop in small local shops, people must be able to park for free! If the local shops want people to visit, they need to have a website and update it daily showing their offers and they must match the supermarkets and online retailers on price. They also need a home delivery service, similar to that of Iceland, where you shop and they drop your shopping home for you later. Primarily because Liskeard is on the side of a hill/ravine and elderly people, in fact any people don’t want to dislocate their shoulders by carrying masses of shopping home!
There are some wonderful shops and places to eat in Liskeard. We have independent shops including a hardware store, butchers, two green grocers, two or three clothes shops, lots of hairdressers and beauty salons, farm supplies, a library, chemists and a craft shop where I buy my quilting supplies and many other shops including five charity shops. If I’ve left any out, then I apologise.
I hope you get to see the programme tonight at 9pm on Channel 4. Liskeard is a charming market town with a very Cornish feel that serves the local folk and not just the tourists as some places do. Liskeard is doing a great job of bringing the place to life and I hope lots of people visit after seeing the programme.
Until tomorrow,

Frugal Holidays?
Hello Dear Reader,
We are very lucky that we do not have to put our dogs into kennels when we go on holidays as we hire the service of dog sitters who have our dogs in their homes. For two weeks, their house becomes home from home for our dogs. However, to secure this service, we have have to book a year in advance. We have now committed ourselves to going away on holiday for the first two weeks of the summer holiday next year. There are a million advantages to being a teacher and the most important are being entrusted with other people’s children and being part of bringing them up. There is only one disadvantage and that is the fact that we can never get a cheap holiday. We pay a premium or we don’t go.
I do have hints and tips from travelling at peak times that can save folk money and we will use ourselves. My main hint is France. If you live in the South of the UK then France is on our doorstep. If you live in the South East then the cheapest and quickest crossing. You can save your Tesco vouchers for ferry crossings. Every £10 worth of Tesco vouchers will buy you £30 worth of ferry tickets and you can save your Tesco vouchers all year. P&O Ferries will allow you to pay up to £210 with Tesco vouchers. You can also book your ferries through Quidco and get a 7% cashback on Brittany Ferries and 10% back on P&O Ferries. You can also select cheaper times and days to cross. It is sometimes cheaper to go a day before and stay in a very cheap hotel or put up a two man tent and squeeze in and get to your accommodation the next day to get a much cheaper holiday.
Next. The French school don’t have a summer half term break. If you book the last week in May, you can get some good weather BUT don’t book through a British company as they will charge you more. By all means, look in the Eurocamp brochures or websites and then look for French owned campsites in the same area. They will be much, much cheaper!!!! More advice on campsites………….don’t be fooled or over awed by star rating. The amount of stars relate to the leisure facilities. You will pay more for water slides, cafes and shops. If you are happy with a clean chalet, log cabin or mobile home then 2* or 3* are adequate. I like a pool but I wouldn’t be bothered if there wasn’t one. Likewise, I don’t need a launderette and the local towns are full of them and they are much cheaper than those on the campsites.
If you do have to go in the peak season then as will all things, set a budget and stick to it. We have a year to save the money to go on holiday. It will be more expensive than the low season version we had last year but it will still be a relatively cheap holiday. We spend the bulk of our budget on accommodation and we rent a mobile home. We know what we will get and there will be no surprises. You might be surprised what you don’t get in a French mobile home: a kettle, bedding, oven, teapot, and the kitchen equipment is basic. We take what we need with us and completely cater for ourselves when we are there. We take food with us and just buy bread, fruit and salad when we get there. We don’t drink much and buy one three litre box of wine and usually bring it home half used. We also take all of the cleaning products, first aid kit and medicines……you never know what is going to sting or bite you and rich food can play havoc with your digestion! We take antihistamines, anti-inflammatory gel and tablets, migraine tablets, and imodium…..we can all over do the oysters! We take lots to do as well. We take a laptop and DVDs for snuggly nights in, lots of books and I take some craft to keep my busy. We also take our own bikes to save on hiring them…..the ferry company charges us another £15 or so to do that but again, it keep the costs down and we travel everywhere by bike when we get there.
Wherever you choose to go on holiday, if you choose………….take a look at airbnb.co.uk - independent hoteliers, B&Bs and accommodation providers advertise their rooms. I even found a B&B enroute to use as an example with accommodation for £43 per night for two people including breakfast.
Now back to the old chestnut of holidays being more expensive in school holidays. When our children were young we didn’t take them out of school and consequently meant we couldn’t afford to take them anywhere on holiday. We used to take them camping (the trauma of which still haunts me that tents on the internet make me weepy with the miserable memories……………friggin’ unromantic too…………trying too hard to be quiet to not wake kids is more of a passion killer than big knickers and hairy legs!!) in Cornwall…………………I live here now and just go home every night, so NO I don’t camp! I digress, back to school holidays. The party line would be for me to say, I hope people can find a way of taking their children on a holiday and not miss school, personally I fully understand why families do it. Take a look at the article I found below and let me and the world know what you think.
Over to you, Would you take your children out of school for a cheaper holiday (classed on your child’s record as an unauthorised absence if you don’t get permission from the school) or would you go on a camping or caravan holiday to take them somewhere affordable. Also, feel free to have a rant and the disgusting mark up that holiday companies charge for holidays in the school breaks!!!
- British families spend an average of £1982.00 on their annual holiday
- Families taking some or all of their holiday during school term time estimate they save an average of £664.00
- 75% of families taking their children out of school would take the whole holiday in term time to get a better deal
- 65% say they can’t afford to have a holiday during the school holiday periods
- 73% would be happy for their children to miss 5 or more school days
- 23% would be happy for their children to miss 10 or more school days
- 74% ask the school’s permission to take their children out of school
- 70% take their children out of school anyway even if the school refuses permission
- 39% have lied to the school about their children’s absence in order to have a holiday during term time
